Dear Dr. David Yonggi Cho:
I well remember the first time I met you. You had just arrived
in Seoul to attend our Bible school. I was surprised how well you spoke
English when you handed me a letter from Brother Richards. You were an
excellent student and later on the students elected you as the president of
the student body. I have a photo of you preaching from a pavilion in a
nearby park while other students were passing out Christian tracts to the
people.
Since our house was close to the school, you visited us and
especially my little library. One of the books which impacted your life
was the one written by Oral Roberts. I sometimes relive the train trips we
made through Cholla Do. Remember the half drunken old man who told you
that he did not want to change his life for the better now because he
wanted to enjoy his wine for the present time.
It was
then that you prophesied. 'This man thinks that he has a long time to
enjoy his wine; but he doesn't realize that in just two hours his life
will be taken from him.'
About two hours later, he fell from the train when jumping from his coach
to the next.
I will never forget what you told me after I gave you your
diploma at graduation ceremonies. You said that you did not want to be
financially supported by the missionaries nor receive subsidy from the
Korean headquarters, but you wanted to trust God and live by faith. It was
very difficult for you to pioneer a church with no money and with only a
few children in attendance. But in about three years you filled a huge
evangelistic tent with people.
When the time was right, the missionaries chose you to be the
pastor of a brand new ministry in Seoul's West Gate. Here again, the work
progressed rapidly.
In time the new facility had to be remodeled to accompany the growing
congregation.
With the enlarged auditorium and a balcony and a five story front and with
multiple services, it became too small.
So the next step was to build a huge facility on an island within
Seoul.
In time, even that huge building had to be enlarged to look like a stadium.
Just think--- Our little two year school today is a huge
university with 4,000 students; and that small two-year school produced
the pastor of the largest church in the world!!!

조용기 목사님께:
제가 처음으로 목사님을 만나뵙던 때를 잘 기억하고 있습니다. 목사님께서 저희 성경 학교에 참석 하기 위해서 바로 서울에 도착하셨었습니다. 저는 목사님께서 저에게 Richards 형제로 부터의 편지를 건네 주시면서 너무 영어를 유창하게 구사하시는 데에 놀라지 않을 수 없었습니다. 목사님께서는 매우 훌륭한 학생이셨으며, 차후에 학생들은 목사님을 학생 회장으로 선출 하기도 하였었지요. 저는 목사님께서 가까운 공원에서 설교 (연설)를 하고 계시고, 다른 학생들은 전도책자를 사람들에게 나누어 주는사진도 가지고 있습니다.
저희집이 목사님이 다니시던 학교와 매우 가까웠기 때문에, 목사님께서는 저희 가정을 방문해 주셨었지요, 특히 제 작은 서재를 말입니다. 목사님의 인생에 큰 영향을 주었던 책들 중 한권은 바로 Oral Roberts의 책이었습니다. 저는 때때로 우리가 Cholla Do 를 지나던 여정의 기차여행을 다시금 해보기도 한답니다. 반쯤 취한 노인이 목사님께 더 나은 삶을 위하여 그의 인생에 변화를 주고 싶지 않다고 말했던 것을 기억하시는지요? 단지 그의 현재의 삶에서 술을 마시는 것을 즐기는 편을 택하길 원했기 때문이었지요.
그리고 나선 목사님이 이렇게 예언을 하셨었습니다. ' 이 남자는 그가 그의 술을 오래도록 즐길 것이라고 생각하겠지만, 2시간 후면 자신의 삶이 끝나게 될 것이라는 것을 알지 못하는 구나.' 그리고 그는 두시간 후 다음 열차칸으로 뛰어넘다가 기차에서 떨어지고 말았었습니다.
저는 목사님께서 제가 목사님께 졸업식에서 학위를 수여한 다음에 저에게 말씀하셨던 것을 결코 잊지 않을 것입니다. 목사님께서는 선교사들에 의하여 재정적으로 지원을 받기도 원하지 않으시며, 한국의 재단으로 부터도 지원금을 받길 원하지 않는다고 하셨습니다. 다만 목사님께서는 하나님을 신실하게 믿으며, 그 믿음안에서 살아가기만을 원한다고 말씀하셨지요. 아무런 돈도 없이 몇몇 성도들만으로 교회를 개척하시기에 매우 어려우셨을 것입니다. 그러나 3년정도 흐른 후 목사님께서는 그 천막을 사람들로 가득 채워 복음이 충만한 곳으로 만드시고야 말았습니다.
바로 적기의 시간이 되자, 선교회에서는 목사님을 서울 서부 지역을 위한 새로운 목회의 담임 목사님으로 선택을 하게 되었습니다. 다시한번 그 일의 진행 과정이 정말로 신속하게 흘러갔지요. 그 당시 교단의 성장에 부합하기 위하여 새로운 시설들이 재건축이 되었어야 했었습니다. 더커진 강당과 발코니가 있는 5층높이의 건물로 많은 시설들을 다 담아 내려면 그당시의 건물은 너무 작았었습니다.
따라서 그 다음 단계는 바로, 서울에 있는 작은 섬에 그 거대한 시설을 지어내야만 하는 것이었지요. 그당시, 그렇게 거대한 건물을 짓는 다는 것은 마치 경기장과 같은 모습을 하고 있었어야 했습니다. 생각해 보십시다 -- 처음엔 2년제로 시작했던 작은 학교가 이제는 4000명의 학생을 수용하는 거대한 대학이 된 것 처럼 말입니다. 그리고 그 작은 2년제 학교가 이 세계에서 가장 커다란 교회의 목사님을 만들어 내었다는 것을요!!!
